Hey shortie, grow up

FOR diminutive men such as French President Nicolas Sarkozy, famously overshadowed by his wife Carla Bruni, a pair of stack heels used to be the only way to stand tall.

But a surgeon has devised a new way of adding up to 5cm to a person's height by inserting a silicone head implant.

During a 90-minute operation, an incision is made in the side of the head and the implant squeezed in between the skull and the scalp.

Dr Luis de la Cruz developed the procedure to help people who would normally be too short for jobs with a minimum height.

He claims would-be soldiers, police officers, flight stewards, models and firefighters are lining up for the surgery at his Madrid clinic. The operation costs from $8500 and is performed using a local anaesthetic. Patients are usually released from hospital the next day, and the only sign they have had surgery is a small scar, usually covered by their hair.

Dr de la Cruz, 47, has already carried out the operation on 17 patients.

"It is a relatively simple procedure that can have a wonderfully positive effect on the patient's life," he said.

Ewwww... That's absolutely disgusting, Chris. If leg lengthening surgery and HGH weren't bad enough... That article is just a reminder to me of mankind going downhill.

You said it, my friend, you said it.

However, being male and short is really a challenging proposition. I have thought of leg lenghtening myself many times. But, I like cycling too much to be away from my bicycles for a year or more. My women will have to accept me the way I am - concentrated :D

This is very disturbing. It is very sad that as a society we would rather manipulate our bones, take dangerous hormones, and now put implants in our head as opposed to putting our efforts towards addressing this societal prejudice known as heightism. :(

I'm glad you test as having less prejudice toward (fellow) short men. But it's very sad that, even for a passing moment, you considered leg lengthening surgery. But I don't blame you for feeling that way, I understand how difficult it is to be a short man, as much as I could without actually being one, and... I'm anorexic.

Calling me friend, I'm not the least bit sarcastic about it, you really made my day! ;)

This is insane. What if 5 cm isnt enough to become what was it a soldier or flight attendent, will the conehead model be next?
Its hard to believe that 17 people have already had this operation.
I agree Matt, when does this stop and people simply address heightism?

I'm most bemused by the picture caption "Actor Tom Cruise is shorter than his wife Katie Holmes - is a head implant the solution?"

The obvious implication is that it is a problem. For all the problems that Tom Cruise does have, ;-) I reckon that being married to Katie Holmes is not one of them.

I am not sure this procedure would work for me.
Would I have to pull my head out of my butt before the surgery?

I remember reading something about the French P.M SARKOSY
about he wanted an implant in his head so he wasnt that much shorter than his wife. The thing is it was in our daily paper called THE SUN and every year they do the same old thing and it ended up being an APRIL FOOLS JOKE.I mean when you read these stories early in the morning not realizing what day it is then it can seem TRUE.But when i read the story i knew straight away it was a hoax lol.
Saying that there are possibly some weirdo's who would do this sought of thing not thinking of the damage it could cause.
